The "Ponte dell'Accademia" was part of the urban restructuring designed in the latest Austrian rule, from 1848 to 1866, that includes the Ponte degli scalzi.

Originally called the Bridge of Charity for the neighbourhood area of the complex which included: the Convent of Charity, the Church of Our Lady of Charity and the Scuola Grande of Charity, that later became the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, it was built in iron by the Austrian engineer Alfred Neville and opened in 1854.

For problems of corrosion and decay after a few years began to have problems that over time they became effective. For this reason it was replaced by a temporary wooden bridge, designed by Eugene Hubs.

Open to the public on February the15th in1933, it has not been replaced since the soundness of the structure. However due to the costs and ongoing maintenance over the years, in 2009 the municipality of Venice issued a call for its reconstruction, which is entirely supported by sponsors, to finally overcome the costly maintenance that has been done in recent years.
